Working Group: Combustion Technology

Combustion is still the most widely used process worldwide to produce products such as heat of varying degrees and electricity from chemically bound energy in fuels. Due to the CO2 produced during the combustion of carbonaceous fuels and issues related to emissions of fluorinated hydrocarbon compounds, this process is often criticized, especially when it comes to issues related to the circular economy, in which incineration is considered "end-of-pipe" or associated with a linear economy. Waste incineration is a key component of the circular economy against the backdrop of optimized technology for concentrating and separating pollutants from complex compound wastes that cannot be further recycled at the current state of the art. Therefore, the following topics are addressed in the working group:

  • Combustion under oxygen-carbon dioxide atmosphere for efficient separation of carbon dioxide from exhaust gases
    The state-of-the-art incineration usually uses ambient air as an oxidant because it is a universal commodity and thus free of charge. Regarding the CO2 reduction targets, CO2 capture processes are being discussed in waste incineration. At the waste incineration plant Zella-Mehlis (www.insuedthueringen.de/inhalt.suedthueringen-methanol-aus-muell-ersetzt-benzin.04230c2f-1132-422f-b042-70c1c2ce50d3.html)a CO2 removal is in the planning stage. The efficiency of the capture processes depends not only on the process used but also on the CO2 concentration in the flue gas. When using an oxyfuel process, the CO2 content can be increased from currently about 15 vol.% to more than 60 vol.% - depending on the operating conditions. In oxyfuel operation, CO2 replaces atmospheric nitrogen; oxygen is provided as an oxidant from an air separation unit. The higher capture efficiency of CO2 must therefore take into account the separation of oxygen from the air and the recirculation of part of the CO2 for cooling purposes in the combustion chamber. We investigate research topics on the degassing, ignition and combustion behaviour of solid lumpy fuels under oxyfuel conditions compared to air and analyse the solid residues. We support the transferability of the results obtained in a laboratory scale to industrial applications with a numerical model ("KLEAA code").
  • Reduction of nitrogen oxides by oscillating combustion
    Nitrogen oxides are part of the exhaust gas in almost all combustion processes and are limited accordingly due to their toxicity. They are formed by nitrogen in the fuel reacting with oxygen or by the reaction of atmospheric nitrogen with atmospheric oxygen at high temperatures. In order not to avoid additional expenses in exhaust gas purification after firing, the target is to reduce the nitrogen oxides already in the firing, i.e. when they are formed, by various measures. One technical solution is the oscillating supply of air. A reduction of nitrogen oxides by approx. 50 % could be achieved in a laboratory scale.
  • Investigations on the thermal degradation of PFAS in furnaces
    Perfluorinated and polyfluorinated alkyl substances (PFAS) are an important environmental issue in the media as well as on the part of the regulatory authorities in the EU (https://echa.europa.eu/en/hot-topics/perfluoroalkyl-chemicals-pfas). We deal with topics about the thermal degradation of these compounds in furnaces and cooperate with laboratories that can analyse PFAS and research institutions such as the Federal Institute for Materials Testing (https://www.bam.de/Navigation/EN/Ueber-die-BAM/Organisation/Organigramm/Praesident/Abteilung-1/Fachbereich-11/fachbereich11.html), with whom we jointly develop innovative analysis methodology and test them in an incinerator.
